April Gardening Jobs

Spring is here, with stunning flowers and flowering cherry blossoms on the trees. With the anticipated April showers this month, we must plan accordingly and get out in the garden as often as we can. It’s the perfect month to start showing your seeds outdoors but keep watch for sudden frosts.

Jobs in the Flower Garden

  • Sow hardy annuals and native wildflowers.
  • Add a splash of spring colour to your container garden with some primroses and blooming hyacinths.
  • Remember to deadhead spring bulbs and bedding after they finish blooming to help them reserve energy.
  • Spray the new leaves of disease-prone roses with fungicide to control and mildew, rust and black spot.
  • Sow sunflowers in a sunny, open site. Make sure to water regularly and protect seedlings from slugs and snails.

Jobs in the Fruit & Veg Garden

  • Plant maincrop potatoes
  • Sow outdoor varieties of tomatoes, chillies and courgettes in pots, getting them ready to plant out in late May or June.
  • Divide clumps of hardy herbs like lemon balm and chives, replanting in pots, borders or a dedicated herb bed.
  • Plant bare-root asparagus crowns.
  • Sow herbs like parsley, coriander and dill in a sunny bed or container.
  • Start to feed citrus plants.

House Plant Care

  • Start feeding houseplants once a week with liquid fertiliser.
  • Water houseplants more regularly as the temperatures warm.
  • Regularly wipe houseplant leaves to remove dust.
  • Check for pests like aphids, scale insects, thrips and mealybugs.

Jobs in the Greenhouse

  • Move greenhouse tomatoes into growing bags or large containers and tie the stems to supports.
  • Plant up hanging baskets and pots with summer bedding.
  • Sow runner beans, french beans, cucumbers, courgettes, pumpkins and sweetcorn in pots.
  • Clean greenhouse glazing to let in as much light as possible.

April Garden Maintenance

  • Lay turf or sow grass seed to create a new lawn or repair damaged patches.
  • Remove moss and weeds in turf, and boost growth with a nitrogen-rich lawn feed.
  • Clear debris from gutterings of sheds and greenhouses.
  • Install a water butt to collect rainwater.
  • Remove weeds from borders and vegetable patches.
  • Put out food and shelter for birds.
